Interpersonal Communication

I took this course in Spring 2019 with Professor Guntzviller. Through taking CMN230, I have gained a systematic knowledge in interpersonal communication. I applied the theories and principles to my everyday life. For example, I am not good at managing conflict, but intimate relationships usually spark dialectical tensions and lead to conflicts. My friend and I always have conflicts regarding our need for autonomy versus connection. In this case, I learned to use strategies for dealing with dialectical tensions to resolve conflicts. Dialectical tensions surround conflicts between two opposing needs of people and conflicts arise from situations when interdependent people try to achieve incompatible goals. Rather than accusing my friend’s flaws, I resolve our problem by finding a middle ground to satisfy both of our conflicting needs.

Introduction to Leadership Studies

I took introduction to leadership studies in Fall 2019 with Professor Kari Keating. We covered leadership theories and their application to leadership and followership in multiple settings. I evaluated my leadership traits, skills, and behaviors and learned to enhance them in leadership practices. In one of our assignments, I analyzed my leadership competencies and used the result to reflect on Blake and Mouton's leadership grid . My results reveal that I have room for improvements regarding my people skills. When I am task-oriented, I often neglect relationship building, making me less of a well-rounded leader. In order to improve this, I worked on keeping calm, being articulate and interacting with people more during another project and this led to a good outcome.
